Collect4 launched this week with the first of four weeks of exhibitions
- The Painting Week. Sixteen emerging, graduate painters' pieces fill the gallery walls until Sunday displaying a wealth of concepts, styles, materials and fresh talent.

Tuesday evening saw five DegreeArt.com artists presenting their recent work and ideas in the painting portfolio review to Catherine Dhullu (Modern Painters, LBT), Lee Mathews (Private Collector) and DegreeArt.com
Directors Elinor Olisa and Isobel Beauchamp. Andy Owen introduced his plans and paintings for his forthcoming solo show 'in/ex/ternal' whilst Kostas Georgiou explained the importance of music, and the representation of this, in his canvases. Kate Marshall gave the audience a preview of her forthcoming limited edition book exploring the phenomenon of the 'celebrity artist' through printmaking.

The First Thursday late night opening saw the gallery packed to the rafters with the usual eclectic mix of artists, art students, collectors and all round art private view enthusiasts! Click here to view selected photos from the night.

The next late night opening will be held during the Sculpture week next Thursday the 9th October 6pm til late in association with Run Riot.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
DegreeArt.com kicks off its Collect4 season with a week of painting that cements the medium's reputation as one of the most engaging, intelligent, varied and approachable on the contemporary art circuit.

The works on show largely deal with sense and experience, both real and perceived. Andrew Newton seeks the viewer's personal interpretation of his exquisitely rendered close-ups of oblivious sitters, whilst Zoe Crosse's expressive nudes both entice and repel the viewer in an art historical game of cat and mouse. Disparate social connotations and conventions are explored in the sensual surfaces of both Kate Marshall and Andy Owen's work, whilst the viewer's environment is questioned in the canvases of Gabor Gyory.

Doing what they do best DegreeArt.com will open their doors making Art accessible, affordable and approachable. Each week a carefully select group of artists will be showcased.

Moses Powers

Student photographer extrordinaire Moses Powers teamed up with Alex Nobel to curate this year's Guardian Lounge at Glastonbury. Utilizing his skills at sourcing bizarrely complimentary object Powers and Noble created a fantasy hanging centre piece for the tent.

Moses's limited edition prints are available on the site.

'Mayra Reyes Solis'
2008

Kate has been invited to do a retablo portrait of Mayra Reyes Solis, a 17 year old Mexican high school student murdered in 2001. "400 Women" is a project featuring 400 portraits by Lomax, Tracey Emin, Annie Kevans, Maggi Hambling and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. It intends to make a serious political statement but also a fund-raising activity for the groups of activists that are supporting women's rights and continuing the fight to stop violence against women in Mexico and beyond.

The Vyner Street Festival

For the 5th year running The Eel Collective and The Victory Pub hosted the Vyner Street Festival. Its aim is to bring the new eastenders, the artists, new media workers, musicians together with the long-standing working class community. Over the past 4 years the Street has undergone a silent revolution seeing the influx of over 14 galleries and numerous studios making it the highest concentration of art galleries in all of London.

Proceeds are donated to Child Cot death charity FSIDS, chosen by Victory landlords Steve and Auring.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

DegreeArt.cpom presents The Transient City, the debut show from artist-on-the-rise Lewis Scott. Since graduating from Central St Martins in design, environment and architecture this June, Scott has built a reputation as an artist with an eye for urban landscapes. Looking beyond familiar landmarks to the darker, hidden aspects of cityscapes, he draws on the changing skies and weather. Scott's paintings are often heavy on foregrounding; it's as though you're looking at them from behind a wire fence or through gauze. This vantage point creates an eerie distancing effect, also evident in his photos of anonymous night skies. (Helen Holtom, Flavor Pill)

- Andy Wicks and David Northedge - New Paintings

Semi figurative smears and acidic geometric fields combine in Andy Wicks and David Northedge's New Paintings. Both artists articulate a wasted dystopian landscape in which Wicks' liquid thin veils of colour corrupt and obscure floating geometric forms as though we are seeing alien planets through toxic condensation gathered on the window of our bathyscaphe. Northedge's semi abstract islands of slickly smeared silhouettes, scarred surfaces and flat planes of colour, depict an ambiguous junction between the figurative and the abstract. The cultivated application of paint gives his work an attraction which contradicts the apocalyptic subject matter.

- Fiona Athanassaki - New Paintings

Fiona is a London based painter and this is her follow on exhibition after her successful solo show at the Spitz Gallery in 2006.

She works with a mixture of paint mediums, using traditional techniques such as gilding combined with a variety of other materials to explore their interaction, contrasts and textures producing images radiant with colour and vibrancy. Her painting is influenced by landscape primarily from the Mediterranean. Using simple abstract forms and colour, surfaces are worked on with glazes to build up a layered transparency and to create a sensation of depth. These paintings are explosive experiments into the world of colour.

David Le Flemming's work for the most part is conceptual in that each piece is hinged with some sort of inherent visual pun. The characters are central to the themes, with close attention to detail being payed to the faces which then peaters out to flat colour fields of the surrounding environment.

The Grotesque Style: ‘…in which parts of human, animal, and plant forms are distorted and mixed…’ (Harper Collins Dictionary 2003)

Inspired by the book ‘Demons, Visions of Evil in Art’ ( by Laura Ward and Will Steeds, Carlton Books) EllieMay is mixing the grotesque style with her 3d paper cut-out style, to delve into the medieval world of monsters. With the wonderful space at DEGREEART GALLERY, EllieMay has produced work especially for the space, recognizing it’s gothic character.

Kate Marshall returned to DegreeArt.com's gallery almost a year to the day after her 2007 solo debut was singled out as a must-see by the Sunday Times. Her signature figures in acrylic and charcoal “flirt between painting and drawing” and feature alongside work that shows a new bent for printmaking.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
Bra-burning strip artists, suffragette jockeys and voyeuristic glances through the glass ceiling offer a “smutty, seaside postcard humour” take on feminism, femininity and the sexualized female image in popular culture. Her inspiration comes from images of women “culled from a glossy magazine, a fairy tale, historic art and literature, trash culture, ancient myth and coffee table erotica.

DegreeArt.com Artists at the RA Summer Exhibition

The begining of the Art World’s summer season was heralded by the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition 2008 opening last week. Six DegreeArt.com artists’ work is on display this year alongside pieces by Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Anish Kapoor and Gavin Turk. The show becomes the place to be seen each year, not only by artists but TV and Music celebrities too, is now in its 240th year. Lily Allen, Estelle, Vernon Kay, Jarvis Cocker and Simon Le Bon were all in attendance at the Private View.

The exhibition, which operates an open submission policy, allows unknown/ emerging artists to hang on the same walls as the living greats of the contemporary art scene.

Coordinated by Royal Academicians Humphrey Ocean, Tony Cragg and Gordon Benson, the theme of this year’s show is’ Man Made’.

Much hype has surrounded recently elected Academician Tracey Emin’s curatorial offering of room 8 which true to form consists mainly of pornographic works.

The Degree Shows So Far...

The 2008 graduate degree shows are well under way and if you can make it over to the Royal Academy Show before the 22^nd of June pay a visit to the RA Schools Show (situated behind the Burlington House entrance) to see the 17 graduates who have just completed their 3 year stint at the RA.

Though bluestocking feminists may have bristled at Kate Marshall's pinups preening in robin's egg hosiery, the 26-year-old English artist's show of paintings on the emerging artists' online gallery www.DegreeArt.com and in its bricks-and-mortar space on London's hip Vyner Street has the feisty flirtatiousness that post-Madonna women's rights crusaders approve of. Drawn in the loose and limber style of fashion illustrations and inspired by glossy editorials, Marshall's work is intended to offer a "smutty, seaside postcard humour's take on feminism, femininity, and the sexualized female image in popular culture.

The work aims to represent the city of London and others as a place of atmosphere and emotion dictated by light, weather and architecture. An art book that you don’t need a degree in Art History to understand and can be read by anyone who ever marveled (or scoffed) at the contemporary art market. The hotly anticipated 2008 exhibition Sam's Desktop III by Dan Proops opened last night at Vyner Street's busiest gallery. Invited guests and TimeOut's First Thursday's visitors spent an evening amongst Proops' monumental new paintings and Pop Art inspired montages. As Proops' career continues to gain momentum one can only guess at what subject matter he will choose to follow the Sam's Desktop trilogy.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
In this riveting new show, Proops has created a collection of dazzling and powerful pieces, including a reworking of Dali’s 1954 ‘Hypercubic Body'. By setting it within the framework of a computer desktop, Proops is commenting on the new ‘religion’ of modern computing and the classical tradition of fine art painting.

Proops integrates our obsession with the fleeting progression of technology with the epic tradition of fine art painting. He has taken the Microsoft OS as a subject matter for paintings in oil on canvas is pioneering new theories relating to the design concepts and visualisations that contribute to the design of the modern day operating system.

The hotly anticipated Private View of Ruth Holloway’s ‘A Bird’s Eye View’ took place last night at Vyner Street’s busiest gallery - DegreeArt.com at the Empire. Party guests were treated to the unusually named natural energy drink ‘Pussy’, extra blond beer from ‘Vedett’ and music from our DJs Alex and John who provided the perfect sounds. The event was held in aid of Ovarian cancer action raising awareness of this often under publicized disease through the unexplored view of the female form depicted in Ruth’s 18 hand stitched canvases. For our charity raffle the Strand Palace Hotel kindly donated a 2 night stay for 2 guests at their hotel whilst the runner up received a case of personalized beer bottles from Vedett.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
The exhibition is both visually and mentally stimulating. Ruth’s choice of bright, textured canvas colours contrasting with the threads, oil pastels and the occasional crystal and chain creates satisfying compositions. The subject matters are both reaffirming and educative for the viewer. We all see a bird’s eye view of our own bodies yet rarely consider it worthy of recognition let alone depiction on canvas however, the artist’s clever use of this perspective reminds us of our neglect. The daily narratives depicted range from sunbathing and surfing to pregnancy testing and shaving legs.

As Ruth says her inspiration is taken from the mundane to the pivotal which together result in a diary of the contemporary female’s personal images of her body.

PRIVATE VIEW OF PLEASURE ISLAND

The title of the exhibition, Pleasure Island, refers to the name of the island in Carlo Collodi's children’s novel "Pinocchio". In the novel, Pleasure Island serves as a haven for wayward children, allowing them to indulge their vices in an environment that is seemingly free of recrimination.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

With this new work, Nathan James illustrates the convergence of two modern domains: cartoon and plastic and flesh and bone. The boundaries between the two areas are not neat or evenly divided. Instead, they overlap, intersperse and transform each other spatially. The plastic world promises excitement and holidays. With its endless curves of neon, cuts and slashes of bright colour and pretty lights, it offers a virtual gluttony of sensory delights, instant gratification and fulfillment. At the same time, it simultaneously divides, covers and competes for dominance with other elements of the composition. It thereby permanently transforms the youthful, pleasure-seeking human subjects of the paintings along with everything around them.

Here, James presents a day-glow matrix that is the antithesis to the modern world envisioned in 1956 by Richard Hamilton, with his principal Pop work “Just What Is It That Makes Today’s Homes So Different, So Appealing?”. With these paintings James is inferring mass media materialism can indeed fulfill some of their promises of leisure and enjoyment, but at the cost of forfeiting some of the subjects’ humanity.

James uses a combination of techniques, including traditional painting, silk-screen printing, and stenciling to achieve his distinctive works. He finds inspiration from many sources, including trash TV, graphic design, vintage photography, popular magazines and his own passion for youth culture.

We are hosting our very own, first student and recent graduate photography award exhibition in May this year - the Signature Photography Awards. Artists and Politicians:
Our very own Lorna Wadsworth was interviewed on BBC radio early in January and to her suprise the interviewer had a former sitter of hers - MP Michael Howard waiting on the line to greet her.

As some of you know Lorna recently painted Michael Howard's portrait but was taken aback to learn that Westminster rejected the painting as the Right Honourable Gentleman was painted in profile as opposed to full frontal!?

We can therefore offer Lorna's piece to our clients but it will only be sold
on the proviso that it remains as it was returned from Westminster, wrapped

Visit DegreeArt.com Artists' Studios -
Throughout 2008 we will be holding a monthly studio visit with selected DegreeArt .com artists. The visits will offer a great insight into how and where the artist creates their masterpieces, as well as allowing you to be able to ask questions in an informal setting. It is also a good opportunity to see work in progress and snap up pieces before they go on general sale.

The first studio visit of the year is on the 20th February at Nathan James' studio in Tulse Hill, South East London. Nathan will briefly introduce his work and be available for discussion over a glass of wine. The event is free to members of the Collector's Club or £10 each for non members. Click

Victoria Scott in Print -

Illustrator Victoria Scott has had her designs published in Illustration +Play alongside 22 other artists working across the globe. The book attempts to show that in a digital world there is still space for a more hands-on approach in illustration. The book is beautifully illustrated and with exclusive interviews is well worth a look.

Illustration+Play is published by Victionary (www.victionary.com) who produce many an interesting title. We especially love Nice to Meet You, a collection of business cards, some beautifully subtle, whilst others seem to be mini sculptures in themselves. Good inspiration for self or company promotion.
